That’s right. The word ‘childish’ derived from the word child. Let them have their ice creams and watch ‘Sponge Bob Square Pants’ is perfectly alright.
Childish is fun, memorable and even bring family members closer together. They are showing their true self and enjoying their childhood.
More often than not, parents and caregivers perceived childish as misbehavior. But think again! If they did not misbehave we should not really do anything to discourage them.
The challenge arrives when we need to draw the line between childishness and misbehavior.
Let’s look at some situations on the following behavior. You can be the judge on whether it is purely childishness or misbehavior.
Situation 1. Tony rushes to the children rides and knocks himself.
Situation 2. Grandpa’s friendly pinch on Kristen’s cheeks made her pinches grandpa back.
Situation 3. Annabel plays the piano. Mike would copy and give a cheeky smile. Annabel plays the piano. Mike would copy and give a cheeky smile. Annabel gets annoyed and swipes his hands away. Mike hit sissy on her face.
Childish or Misbehavior?
Even in real situation, we should ponder and react accordingly.
Situation 1. Children gets minor knocks all the time. Did he knock because the parent did not hold his hands in the first place? Next time, he may knock and roll over a toddler so we really need to be aware of where we are and anticipate our kids’ behavior.
Situation 2. Grandpa would not mind the pinch back. Parents may. It isn’t really misbehavior. It’s purely grandparent bonding moment.
Situation 3. I would say Mike should be taught about taking turns and Annabel should learn to speak to her brother instead using body language. In such situation, parents should advise both parties because it is predictable that such situations are bound to happen.
More often than not, parenting style that builds children behavior. Childish or misbehavior is formed at tender age and children will carry the same behavior through their adulthood.
Ask ourselves if we had done our part to discipline and teach them to be a better person.
