Everyone knows that the mother is looking forward to the new baby in the family, but what about the father? He must be feeling a little worried about the new mouth to feed, the new family responsibilities, new household bills and the need to support the new mum in the first few weeks. When a new arrival appears in the family unit the whole dynamics are changed and responsibilities, expectations and even love moves around. Will dad still get mum to himself? Will he be able to go out with his friends, go to the football, get some time alone with his wife?
Fear not father – the arrival of a new baby is a wonderful time, mother’s hormones are all shook up and nature has given her a lot more love to go round. In many European countries, Japan, Australia, Canada and some states in the USA, paternity leave is available. Most of these countries pay the father paternity law and all of them guarantee some kind of leave as well as provide job security during this time.
Fathers who take advantaged of this paternity leave really enjoy the experience and appreciate the time to bond with the new infant and new mother. The say that it helps them reconnect with their family and reassess their commitments and responsibilities.
The mother also benefits in knowing that her husband or partner is there to help out in these tiring and difficult times. It helps her bond with the new father as well as cope with the new family dynamics that a new baby brings.
The first few weeks of parenthood are very difficult, the new baby that you are not quite sure how to look after, the multiple feeds and nappy or diaper changes not to forget the endless baby crying. If mum and dad are both available to cope with this together – it helps them bond with each other and with the new child in their lives.
