I have just taken the children to the dentist. David has a real phobia, up to now its been as much as he could take just letting the dentist take a look.
So you can imagine the absolute horror he had to endure when he got a tooth infection? And the dentist pulled the needles out followed by a large pair of tooth pulling pliers. David hadn’t expected it, he had just sat there and watched his little sister get a quick check and the all clear, and he was expecting the same.
But all credit to the boy with tears streaming down his face he opened his mouth and let the dentist rip the infected tooth from his head. He really was very brave.
Because Bravery is overcoming fear, it’s not the same as fearlessness. I’m proud of my son he’s got guts. And I’m sure he’s feeling quite pleased with himself at the moment, if he isn’t he should be, I guess he’ll get over his fear completely soon, as he realizes that there is nothing to fear but fear its self.
I think as parents we should not take our children’s fears and phobias lightly. I have taught my children some simple relaxation techniques, including deep breathing to calm them down and bring them back to a place where they feel they are safe.
Its not easy being a parent some times, but it does have its moments and today was a proud day for me. My son is becoming a man.
