All parents are concerned about how their children will grow up to be. Will they grow up to be healthy and wise?

If you want improve your parenting skill, it is good for you to know what shapes your child’s life. A child is shaped by three main factors: the genes of the parents, the environment he grows up in, and the conditions in the womb.

GENES

You hear the adage "Like father like son." I inherit a bad temper, the love of reading and a petite size from my father.

ENVIRONMENT

Children model their behaviors on adults especially their parents and their peers. A study of criminals’ profile show most of them were abused when they were young. Violent parents produce violent children. When children are subject to abuse, they believe that it is normal to deal with their problem in a violent way. As parents, we should become role models for our children, in our behavior, in the way we treat our spouse and how we interact with our children.

Children conform to the group’s code of behaviour just so they can be accepted by the group. The schools, the kids in the neighbourhood and exposure to the media shape their view. If it is the only way of life they are exposed to, they accept it naturally and it becomes their norm. That is why certain rituals that are taboo in others countries are considered a way life in their culture. Hence the community you live in will shape the thinking of your child.

An unhealthy mother affects the offspring too. If she is exposed to pesticides in the food, the chemicals from car exhaust, imagine what it can do to the offspring. Studies show that children living in polluted traffic-congested cities, had a higher incidence of asthma. A study of some kids when they were fetuses during the Chernobyl nuclear accident indicates that their cognitive abilities were affected. Therefore pregnant women have to be careful about their exposure to toxin.

WOMB

Some of the adults’ health problems such as obesity, diabetes and mental illness start in the womb. The weight of a new-born baby can probably indicates the health in adulthood. For example, a scrawny baby is more like to suffer from heart problems in adulthood.

An unhealthy mother is likely to produce unhappy babies. For example, if the mother is poor she is unlikely to take vitamin or eat healthy food to nourish her unborn baby. If she smokes and drinks, it will affect the offspring. If the mother is depressed because of poverty or stressed because of the crisis in her community, the release of the hormone cortisol will affect her offspring.

Experiments with rats show that when pregnant rats are fed on junk food, their offspring turn out to have sweet tooth and are fatter.

In summary, the child is shaped by the genes, the environment, the value of the community, and the transmission from the mother to the baby’s womb.
