Deciding to have a child is one of the most important choices you will ever make. Your decision should be based on a solid and loving marriage, maturity and the ability to make sacrifices when needed.

There may never be a perfect time to have children, but by doing your research and realizing what child rearing is exactly going to entail will give you a better perspective on what to expect.

The following are three things you should consider before having children:

How Solid is Your Marriage?

Having a strong foundation for your marriage is a key factor in having children. Raising children can be a stressful obligation to fulfill together. Make sure you both are on board with the idea of starting a family and the responsibility that goes along with it. Are you both in agreement on how to raise your children, if any disciplinary needs arise? Determine if you and your partner have spent enough time together in your marriage and are at the stage in your relationship when you are ready to add on to your family. If either of you have any doubts or are not committed 100% to starting a family, it’s best to wait until both parties are on board.

Can You Afford to Have Children?

Raising kids can be very expensive. Not only will your child need the basics, like food, diapers and clothing, but as they grow up, their needs will expand to such things like braces, glasses and college. Devise a plan to see what you can afford, will both parents need to work, or can you get by on one income. If both parents are working, what about the costs of nanny care? Have you considered there could be multiple births and are you prepared for those costs? Another expense is being able to afford for your children to be involved in extra-curricular activities such as playing a musical instrument or sports related activities.

Have you Experienced Life?

Timing is especially important when it comes to deciding if you are ready to become parents. Have you experienced life and everything that you want to have experienced for at least the next 18 years? Remember that having a child is a major responsibility and running simple errands like going to the store or getting gas will be a major task. Making the decision that you are in a good place with where you are at in your career, where you are living and the places that you have traveled will help in making your decision to have children.

If you do decide to go ahead and start a family you will need a lot of supplies, from pushchairs to cot bed mattress.
