Bed-wetting is the involuntary passage of urine during the night or day. Enuresis, the medical term for it, is fairly normal among preschoolers up to school-aged children. At this age, a child’s physical and emotional preparedness to maintain complete bladder control differs, especially at night while at sleep. In most cases, they have had this condition since birth and often have at least one close relative; it may either be a parent, uncle or aunt, who has had the same problem at about the same age as theirs. As a fact, about 5 to 7 million children wet their beds at night and it is more common among boys than girls. Many researchers consider Enuresis normal until the age of 6.

Enuresis has two classes; it can either be primary or secondary. A child having primary enuresis never established bladder control while with secondary enuresis, a child begins to wet after a prolonged dry period. Some children have both nocturnal (nighttime) and diurnal (daytime) enuresis.

Some of the causes of bed-wetting are as follows:

Genetic factors (the condition tends to run in families)

Having difficulties waking up from sleep

The development of the central nervous system is slower than normal which lessens the child’s ability to stop the bladder from emptying at night

Hormonal factors such as having not enough anti-diuretic hormone (hormones that lessens the amount of urine made by the kidneys)

Urinary tract infections

Abnormalities in the urethral valves (boys) or in the ureter (girls or boys)

Spinal cord abnormalities

Not being able to hold urine for a long time due to having a small bladder

If a child’s bed-wetting persists after the age of six, parents should seek evaluation and diagnosis from their family doctor or pediatrician. Naturally, a thorough medical history is established before diagnosis can be made by the doctor; followed by physical examination, laboratory tests (including urinalysis), and if needed, radiological studies as well (x-rays). When no medical and or physical problem is found, the parents together with the child may be given reassurance, more information and advices by the doctor; who may no longer recommend treatment. But when the problem is serious enough to require treatment, the doctor may recommend either standard or alternative treatments. Standard treatment include bladder training exercises, motivational therapy, drug therapy, psychotherapy, and diet therapy; while alternative treatments include massage, herbal and homeopathic remedies, and hypnosis.

To correct misconceptions, bed-wetting is not a mental or behavioral problem nor is it an abnormality in a child’s early stages of life. It does not occur because the child is too tired or slothful to get out of bed just to go to the bathroom. And definitely, children do not wet the bed intentionally nor to annoy their parents. Although preventing a child from wetting the bed may not always be possible, parents can observe certain procedures to help alleviate the situation. These steps include:

reassuring your child that this condition will pass as he/she gets older.

let other family members know that this is not a matter to be ridiculed, no teasing should be allowed.

focusing more on encouraging and praising of the child’s staying dry.

reminding the child to urinate before going to bed.

limiting the child’s liquid intake before bedtime.

So if a child has enuresis, talking about it with the pediatrician or family doctor will help a lot in understanding it better. They can also give reassurances that the child is normal and that eventually children outgrow bed-wetting.

The issue of bedwetting causes problems for many families. There are a few good home remedies such as the Malem bedwetting alarm which can help your child get over bedwetting sooner than later.

Funny thing is, few people seem to think sex education is important. Look at the examples. At school, you don’t spend a lot of time in sex ed classes, if you even have a sex ed class. Often, sex ed is taught during a biology class or a health class that doesn’t even last the whole year. Subjects like math and English get more time and attention at every school in the United States. I’m not saying that math and English aren’t important, but the amount of schooling you get in those twosubjects as compared to sex ed is astounding.Schools often don’t spend a lot of time on sex education because administrators believe that sex should be taught in the home. Though, for the most part, not many parents want to talk about sex with their children-they want the schoolsto do it. And, to be honest, teens do not always want to hear about sex from their parents. (Yourparents only had sex the same number of times as there are kids in your family, right?) So, your parents’ idea of sex education may be something like:

“Wait until you’re married.”

“Don’t get pregnant,” or “Don’t get someone pregnant.”

“Use a condom please. I want you to be safe from AIDS.”

And rarely is there actually any discussion involved.

Now, I do want to be fair. Some parents do a great job of talking to their children about sex. I mean really talking about it. They’re open to questions, they listen to what you have to say, and they want to help. But they are sadly in the minority. And they should be applauded. But for the most part, it comes down to this: Your school isn’t giving you the answers you need. Some of them maybe, but not all for sure. And your parents are not letting you in on what they know about sex. So how important can sex education really be if no one is giving you the information you need? I mean, come on. Learning about sex only helps you learn about your body, your relationships with other people, and could possibly save your life. And are those things really that important?

Of course they are. But sex is a difficult subject to talk about-you know that.Sexual relationships are a very personal and private matter. And sex is also pretty abstract. The act itself is easy enough to describe, but all the emotions, feelings, and sensations that go along with it are not. So, talking openly about a personal, emotion-filled act is not an easy thing to do for anyone. It takes practice, time, and a lot of care. So, what happens is that many teens end up with partial information about sex and sexual relationships. They collect bits and pieces from their classes, their parents’ voices, and what they see on television and in the movies. Then, they try to fill in the rest of the information with what they hear from their friends, read on the Internet and in books, and of course, what they learn from personal experiences. And that’s how most of us learn about sex.

It may not be totally accurate, but some information is better than none, right? Well, maybe. Some information is good, as long as that information is right. And, as we all know, our friends, television, and other media are not always accurate. It is difficult to figure out what is and is not true sometimes.

An increase in mental disorders, drug abuse and violence among teenagers aged 21, according to researchers can be traced back to failure of the child’s parents to respond to create "a secure attachment" in the child’s earlier formative years. There is a wide chasm of difference between a stressed, neglected and abused child and those who happen to experience love and security.

Neurobiological reactions in a person that results in prolonged stress exposure exerts much influence in a person’s personality. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) normally associated with war veterans can be experienced by youngsters exposed to the stress of being partly ignored and abused by rod believing violent parents and their failure to satisfy the important needs of a growing child.

Researchers who tracked the lives of traumatized children born earlier until they become 21, found out the existence of behavioral and mental problems-antisocial tendencies characterized by irritability, aggression, and indifference to the welfare of others-their brains developed such high reactive state as if they experienced the way war veterans did. These children appears tensed, frightened and continuously prepared for imagined non-existent danger as those who have been in war. Veterans are well-trained but not these children.

Early childhood trauma from parental neglect, deprivation and mismanagement result in neurochemical reactions in the child’s brain. The brain undergoes rapid transformation in the early child’s life from two to three. There is brain damage; the more fear a young infant is exposed to, the greater damage to the brain function in latter life. Perpetual fear triggers "fight or flight reaction." Stress chemicals that put a child’s mind and body in a permanent alert status renders socialization and memory function dysfunctional. There is always an ever-present sense of danger hovering, nightmares, and lack of concentration (poor scholastic performance) and constant tension. They go around looking for trouble or hopes to find a violent incident in order for them to have satisfaction in it, and where they found none, they themselves initiate the violence which relieves their feeling of tension and fear. Attacking and attempting to kill someone brings to them a pleasurable soothing feeling derived from hormonal flow acting as natural opiates as drugs do. Violence tranquillizes them as it is a product of a natural neurochemical process in an abnormal brain function.

This problem behavior can be reversed in a situation where these youngsters could experience a form of "re-parenting" from loving supportive group of experts who become their new "attachment figure" in a rehabilitation center. They are helped to regulate their behavior, practice tension relieving methods, and acquisition of coping skills. And prepare them for future gainful employment in a highly competitive world.

Does your child exhibit bad behavioral issues? Once a child gets away with a little bad behavior, it becomes difficult to bring them under control. The parent must always keep the child in order. This article will teach you 5 simple ways to improve your child’s behavioral problems.

1) Analyze the Specified Situation

A simple common sense method is to first decide what is bad and good behavior. What is meant by this is for you to understand your child’s bad behavior. Not everything is straight forward. Sometimes a child will be acting out for a little more attention. This typically runs true when dealing with a middle child. Also with this method, you do not want to use the same solution to the same situation. Take a step back and understand why your child is acting out. In other words, choose your battles.

2) Develop some Type of Behavioral Chart

Over the years dealing with my kids, I have found that a behavioral chart will work wonders. Image a 6 year old hearing that they will get a reward for behaving properly. Just the word "reward" makes a child’s mind go wild with excitement. What I did was reward my kids with trips to the zoo or even extra play time outdoors. One mistake I often see parents doing is giving candy or edible treats. There is a strong possibility that down the road, that child in question will overeat and gain weight. What you will need to do is sit down and work out a couple scenarios that will work for your particular situation.

3) Be Serious about Your Instructions

When you play around while trying to discipline your child, you are setting yourself Ctheir parents to be parents. The best friend thing comes second. You have to create concrete rules and follow them with an iron fist. There was one particular day when my oldest son decided to stay out late way past curfew. I had to stand firm and discipline him because the younger ones would follow exactly what he did. To say the least, he never stayed out past curfew again.

4) Count to 10

This is by far one of my favorite methods of cracking down on bad behavior problems. I saw a woman in a restaurant tell her child to quiet down and the kid just got louder. The next thing she did was count slowly to ten. It was not the fact that she counted, but it was the way she did it. After five, her voice seemed to get angrier and the kid was silent before she even got to eight. If you are going to use this, what you need to do is show that which each second that passes, the consequence for the child’s actions will only get worse. There is not kid I know that wants to suffer a consequence from a loud angry parent.

5) Create Proper Time out Spots

This final method really reminds me of my childhood. Whenever I acted out, my parents would sit me in a corner for about five minutes. The most annoying thing was the particular spot they chose. It was just a plain wall with nothing on it and pure silence. To be perfectly honest, I thought about that spot each time I thought of annoying my younger brothers. The point is not to send your child to their room, but to discipline them. In their rooms they have toys, games, comics, and other things to make them happy. In the corner or time out spot, they have time to reflect on what they have done. This will make them also think twice before acting out in any fashion.

The conclusion I want you to understand is that discipline needs to be strict and straight to the point. Think of this as your child’s potty training days. If you play with them during potty time, they will want you to always be there when they need to do it. Just remember children who exhibit bad behavioral issues may need more parental guidance. Try different methods other than the ones listed because different families require different solutions.

Child behavior problems need to be taken care of immediately. Once they go out of hand, it is very hard to conquer. For more free article, strategies, and e-books please visit Positive Parenting Style today!

It is hard to entertain children under the age of five. Attracting the attention of toddlers and keeping them focused are difficult. However, some exciting games are there for the toddlers that make them happy and grab their attention for some time. So many inexpensive games and toys are available for young children. Even a 5-minute car ride with young kids may feel like eternity. Healthy competition is very good and it keeps the kid motivated.

Treasure Hunt:
Items like plastic eggs, party favors, balls should be hid around the place where you hold the party. Before starting the game show, the kids of the samples you have hidden and ask them to find those items. The kid who finds the most can help hide the items again and the game continues with the remaining kids.

Hot Potato:
In this game, the children are either standing or seated in a circle. When the music is played, ask the children to pass around the potato. When the music stops the child, who has the potato is out of the game. This game continues like this until they get a winner. Children usually enjoy this game because of the amount of activity involved in this. It makes the children focus to the music played.

Musical Chair:
Musical chair is another great game for the children under five. This game is similar to the hot potato but a little more action is involved in this. The total number of chairs used in this game is total number of children minus one. Arrange these chairs beck to back in two rows. When the music starts, the children should go around the chair and when the music stops, they have to find and sit on a chair. The kid who does not have a seat is out of the game. Then for the next round take away a chair and continue this game until a single child remains.

You can find a number of video games in the market for five year olds. Some of the famous video games played by these kids are given below.

Finding Nemo:
This game is suitable for the five year olds and up. Various mini-games are available in Finding Nemo. Your child can build his own fish tank; roll the fish into the ocean or across the street. This game gives lot of fun to these kids.

Madagascar:
You can occupy your five year old with this famous game. This is a very big hit among the kids and even adults are playing this game. Each level in Madagascar has different goals. You task is to explore the levels. In each level, you can use a different character. You can find all these characters in the Madagascar movie.

Other games like relay races, hide and seek, wooden blocks are all suitable for this age group. These games are all just a tip of iceberg. You have so many options for educating and entertaining children. Being creative is the most important thing when it comes to entertaining children.

Bath time can be a fight for a mom or dad with a stubborn toddler. However, there are some things you can do to make it fun so that you can both get through it without feeling frustrated by the end. The very most important thing is to make sure the temperature is correct. If a toddler has ever been put into a tub that is too hot or too cold, they may resist getting into the tub from there on out. So, every time, have them check the water with their hand, and you stick your elbow in, before you put them in. This will help eliminate the fear, and let them get on to the fun.

Bath toys. Bath toys are a great way to make bath time more exciting. You can get boats, rubber ducks, basketball hoops that suction to the tub wall, and all kinds of other toys. Just remember that too many toys can be overwhelming, and kids get bored. So rotate the bath toys so that they do not have to use the same ones every time they get in the tub.

Bath crayons. Crayola has created a line of bath crayons, that are washable crayons you can write on the sides of the tub with. Kids have a lot of fun expressing their creativity with these colorful crayons. Even a stubborn toddler may let you wash their hair and behind their ears if it means they get to draw on the tub. Just be sure they know not to do it with real crayons or markers, as they won’t wash off as easily.

Fun soap. These days you can get all kinds of soaps, bubble baths, and lathers for kids to make bath time more fun. You can get a soap in their favorite character bottle. You can get soap in different scents, colors, foaming, or not foaming, etc. Help them have fun washing up with soap that is user friendly. They may want a presoaped washcloth to scrub their toes clean, and be more willing to get clean if the soap is fun.

Bath songs. Next, make it interactive. Toddlers, even stubborn ones, will get into the fun of things if you sing a song about washing them up as you do so. Either make up a song, or look up "bath time songs" online for a list of ideas to help you progress through the various stages of cleaning your child with tunes.

Most kids do not want to take a bath if it is going to be boring, so make sure that they feel like they are involved, and get to make some of the decisions. Let them pick their towel before you put them in, and help them look forward to this one on one time together.

Being a father or mother is a normal part of life, but we typically take it for granted. We often think that we immediately know what is best for our daughters and sons. Sadly, that is not the case; we’ll find ourselves making unfavourable judgments sooner or later. Buying as well as reading parenting books would make us much better mums and dads and assist us in dealing with each and every stage that our sons and daughters experience.

In many cases, when our boys and girls enter the adult years, we do not think about the impact of our earlier choices and actions. Most of us aren’t aware of the right responses to these issues: should we spank or ground them? What would be better for their mental well-being? Should we handle every single situation or let them pass? Almost all fathers and mothers take action and make choices based on their emotions, while other people respond in the same way their moms and dads reacted toward them when they were kids.

Now that we are looking after our very own sons and daughters, we should look into how much our dads’ and mums’ choices influenced our parenting decisions. Do we have an outstanding relationship with our mothers and fathers? Have we and our brothers and sisters grown into satisfied individuals? Mothers and fathers aspire to offer their girls and boys the things they didn’t have in earlier times and help them realise the goals that they couldn’t achieve. Everyone must keep in mind that even though our sons and daughters are extensions of ourselves, they have their own identities. They can’t chase our ambitions or follow our footsteps.

The main job of moms and dads is to aid and love their sons and daughters. They must respond to their needs appropriately and in a timely manner, and with sureness and love. It is a balance that usually can’t be done by a lot of dads and mums. Parenting guides can help us carry out these things and more. This does not automatically imply that we need to abide by each suggestion that’s given in parenting guides. Rather, parenting books will prepare us for certain situations that may manifest soon or in the long run, and also evaluate issues in an objective manner.

There’s no faultless son or daughter, and there surely is no flawless mom or dad. Yet mothers and fathers will normally attempt to provide their children with as much as they could in terms of material items and extreme flexibility; this is the simplest way for dads and mums to make up for what they don’t have. Even though it’s nice for boys and girls to get gifts as well as reside in a lenient household, doing it too much may end up creating greater issues that cannot be solved later.

Parenting books would offer us some knowledge and give us distinctive recommendations about how to control temper tantrums, problems associated with immediate gratification and many other parenting anxieties. There are parenting books for each age bracket and more or less any parenting dilemma we could imagine. Infant, teen and toddler parenting complications are sorted out by guides made by doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, pediatricians and other moms and dads; these types of books will help parents feel as though they’re not alone and that other folks have undergone the same challenges and discovered ways to remove them. New dads and mums would also benefit enormously from child-rearing guides that contain important details on caring for healthy babies.

The fathers and mothers of teenagers would find these child-rearing guides to be a godsend. The teenage stage is where a lot of mums and dads are really tested, and we’re going to need all of the support we could get. Grasping different views and the techniques to take care of particular adolescence-related issues will make us more prepared to say yes to alternative options and tell us what to anticipate. Basically, parenting books would end up as encyclopedias on the methods to cope and deal with unruly teens.

While child-rearing guides are very informative and valuable, dads and moms shouldn’t be exceedingly reliant on them. The purpose of getting as well as making use of child-rearing guides is to gain insight on different parenting problems and improve our child rearing proficiencies. We do not always want to keep looking at parenting books to see how a writer will answer a specific difficulty. We should use our own reasoning and common sense in conjunction with the pointers that we find in parenting books. The bottom line is that all children are different, and we should look for and also make answers that fit each unique issue.

Type 1 diabetes, also known as Juvenile diabetes, has many symptoms that, unfortunately, mimic many common childhood milestones. Learn how to discern the difference between diabetes symptoms and run of the mill healthy childhood behaviors.

1. Increased thirst. As active as children are, it isn’t unreasonable for your child to be demanding more drinks one day from the next. But if your child is thirsty all hours of the day and night and seems to crave ice cold water with the frequency of an addict, their kidneys may be trying to flush glucose from the body. Without insulin to move the glucose along through the blood stream to process it, the sugar builds up triggering a natural desire for more liquids. This is one of the most well-known and recognizable of the Type 1 diabetes symptoms.

2. Increased urination. The body tries to flush out the build-up of glucose through the urine. This need to flush the system can even lead to a sudden onset of night time bed wetting. Unfortunately, because your child is urinating so frequently, they become dehydrated because everything they drink is almost immediately lost. It would be easy to assume that they are merely suffering from a urinary tract infection or that they have bladders the size of chick peas and to attempt to limit their liquid intake.

3. Breath that smells sweet and like fruit. This symptom is also sneaky in that it could be explained away by the fruity flavored toothpastes that children use these days or by the healthy fruit snacks that they are fed. The sweet smell of their breath is a result of diabetic ketoacidosis, which is the body’s attempt to get rid of acetone through the respiratory system. Sweet smelling breath is a signal that poisonous ketones (acid by-products of fats being broken down for energy) are building up in the body. This symptom is a sign that they urgently require diabetes medication.

4. Constant hunger. Children are always growing and always hungry. However, a child with undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes will be ravenous. The food they are eating isn’t being transformed into energy, because the body requires insulin to do that. The sugars that the body breaks the food down into begin to build up in the system causing the cycle of extreme thirst, urination and hunger.

5. Sizable sudden weight loss. Children seem to grow over night and a child that was on the stocky pudgy side last month may appear taller and skinny this month. The difference is that a natural growth spurt will look like a weight loss, but is actually growth and does not usually involve a true loss of weight. However, the weight loss of a child with undiagnosed diabetes will be extreme and sudden. It will occur when they seem to be eating all the time and will seem very different from their usual behavior.

Individually, each of the symptoms listed above, could be seen as natural phases in your child’s development, however, when they occur at the same time, you should see an enormous red flag and book a doctor’s appointment as soon as possible. Type 1 diabetes is an entirely manageable disease, but early detection and treatment are essential for your child’s health and their ability to avoid long term diabetes complications.

Devon Delaney frequently discusses diabetes with his cat, Freddo, who copes with feline diabetes. They wear matching diabetes medical bracelets, although Freddo sports his around his collar.

Many children have issues taking medicine. They don’t like the taste. They don’t want to be stubborn. They don’t think it will work. They might not be able to swallow a pill. All these issues cause problems in getting your child to take the medicine that he or she might need to be taking. Find out what you can do that will help you get your child to take the medicine.

Try not to make this a stressful situation. Sure you want to see your child take it and not cause problems, but if it’s stressful it’s just going to be worse. Don’t add extra anxiety to this situation.

Have a reward built into the taking the medicine. You might offer some sort of treat or special trip if your child takes the medicine like they should be taking.

Give your child a chaser. This is something that your child can take right after taking the medicine. Some medicines don’t taste very good. Having a chaser will help take away the bad taste of it to make the process a bit easier.

Talk to your pharmacist about adding different flavors to the medicine. This will make the medicine cost a little bit more but when this is done it might be the thing that is needed to ensure that your child will take the medicine that needs to be taken.

Let your child feel somewhat in control. Let your child decide when to take the medicine in the evening. Offer some choices like before brushing teeth or after putting on pajamas. Let your child pick which spoon to use. Sometimes the choices let the child feel like he or she is in control of the process.

See if you can mix the medicine with certain foods. You might be able to come with combinations that your child enjoys.

———-
Your child might have a hard time taking their medicine. Find out what you can be doing that will help your child be likely to take medicine with some tips and tricks.

One huge concern that many parents have about their pools is the safety of their children. No one wants their children to be hurt in anyway. When you do have a pool in your backyard, there is a responsibility to make sure that your kids are protected from the potential dangers of this pool. Find out what you need to be doing that will help you ensure this safety.

Always watch your child when in the yard around an open pool. You can’t just assume that everything is going to be fine. Anything can happen. If that pool is something your child could fall into, you need to be there in case it happens.

Install a pool fence. This is a device that goes around your pool in attempts of keeping smaller children from falling into the pool. It’s a physical barrier designed to keep the child out of the water. If you have an above ground pool, consider removing the ladder so a small child can’t get into the water on their own

Use flotation devices on your child who can’t swim well. Always make sure that these children who don’t swim at all on their own have plenty of flotation so it’s hard to sink in the pool.

Enroll each of your child in swimming lessons. This will help as you will know that each has a swimming ability of some sorts. This isn’t total protection but it does add to the overall safety.

Prohibit diving in your pool. Most pools in the yard are just not deep enough to really dive into safely. Some experts can dive in shallow water and be fine, but your children are far from being expert divers.

Keep your kids from running around the pool. It’s so easy to slip, fall, and get hurt when running. Worst off there could be a head injury as well as a slip into the pool meaning that it’s life threatening.

When you have a pool, you have a responsibility to make sure that your children are safe. Find out what you can do that will help keep your children safe when around the pool.
